INSTEP Center for Families |
| INSTEP
(INnovative
Supports To Empower Parents)
is a licensed, drop-in childcare program serving
children and families located in the Whittier neighborhood of
South Minneapolis. In operation since 1991, it is run by experienced
professional early childhood educators and overseen by a volunteer board
of directors. The mission of INSTEP is to provide low cost, consistent,
quality, temporary childcare for families who have no other child care
alternatives and who need the care in order to advance toward
self-efficacy, family health and economic independence.

Families served by INSTEP come from many different parts of the
world and speak a variety of languages. Most of our children are from
minority groups that generally mirror the demographics of the Whittier
neighborhood. From May 2005 to August 2006, INSTEP served a total of 82
families. 93% of the families served were people of color. The
majority of the children speak a language other than English in their
homes (75% in the last year). |
